The American Heartworm Society recommends annual testing and year round heartworm prevention for all patients. While heartworm preventives are very effective, breaks in prevention are still possible as sometimes doses are missed or late and sometimes pets lose a dose due to vomiting or spitting the dose out. Our blood parasite screen also checks for Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis, which are illnesses transmitted by ticks in our area. It is a great insurance policy against serious illness!
